First web design workshop
Posted by: Fats in: Fats, Vitamins & Minerals > Pagtatanghal > Burma 2004I finally finished the web design workshop this afternoon. We started the workshop yesterday at 1PM and ended at 6PM (I forgot about the time and so we went overtime!). Today we started at 10AM and finished at around 5:30. We all had a wonderful time and managed to finish a web artwork, then took a group photo and video. The web artwork was quite a lot of work - I had asked them to bring some newspaper clippings or objects as pairs with contrasting meanings, then we took digital photos of these objects and edited them and made into web pages with rollover images, buttons and pop-ups. The concept behind the web art project was:
Computer medium is a linguistic or language medium and not only a technical tool. Therefore computer medium is also a conceptual medium. In this web-based art collaboration, we will use computer medium to explore the problem of the concept of translation. Translation is the expression of meaning when external meaning/context interacts with internal meaning/context. Aesthetics is not only about superficial beauty but a dynamic balance (and tension) between opposing internal and external forces. In this web-based art collaboration, we will use aesthetics to produce new meanings and experiences by making relationships between internal force (personal identity) and external force (popular culture). What other dual forces can you think of?
Now I need to prepare for the sound workshop. There’s hardly time to rest now it seems, and I do tend to work too hard, push myself too much. After the sound workshop is another web design workshop. A lot of people have registered (over 5 people is a lot of people) and we have only two computers, and we can have four if I let the participants use my laptop and my host lends her laptop too.
For the web design workshop we had 13 participants which is a lot. Luckily, everyone understood English very well (I hope) so there was no need for a translator. And I had all the texts available – the center had them all photocopied and bound together, which was really very useful for the participants to follow the discussions. I provided everyone with CD-ROMs of all the programs, texts, additional information about programming, sample web pages - a lot of really very good resources on learning HTML and learning programming for the web. I guess we had a pretty successful workshop, and I’m very happy, but really very tired.
