Mga Tulâ, Kantá at Pintura

Just finished writing some text for ka-Bangga friend Heber’s painting exhibition. It’s not all finished yet (this is just for media release) and I still have to finish the full text for the brochure - in both Filipino and English! However, I must say that it has been unexpectedly fun and stimulating. It was really good to see Heber’s paintings, listen to what he says about making them, and then figuring out the logic in his forms. I suppose this is what most art critics and historians here consider as boring technical details but I don;t find that to be so at all. The technical and conceptual aspects of (for example) Heber’s work compliment each other and provide us with a rigorous and intelligent basis for the more romantic appreciation of his work - whether his painting or his music. More on this later …

English version below.

Heber Bartolome’s 15th Solo Art Exhibition
(with guest poets and other performers)

Because they contemplated historical conceptualizations of “bayan” or “country” and activated its relationships with the contemporary and the personal, Heber Bartolome’s songs have become the subject of many Philippine studies – in literature, philosophy, history and art. Moreso, the song “Tayo’y Mga Pinoy” (We are Pinoys) has become a folk philosophy.

Thus, one can truly say that Heber’s songs are more than romantic expressions of Philippine society; they are intelligent and critical reflections, they are in themselves studies of the social environment of a particular place and time.

Likewise, Heber Bartolome’s paintings demonstrate a reflection, with reference to songs, of what he calls “tuláy tungo sa kaisipán at pusň ng tao”. With the careful introspection invited by the artist’s solo exhibition “Mga Tulâ, Kantá at Pintura” (Poetry, Songs and Paintings), the same may be said of his paintings that serve not only as bridge towards a person’s heart and mind, but also as bridge between the heart and the mind.

Taking part in the cooperative endeavor, the báyanihán, at the opening of “Mga Tulâ, Kantá at Pintura” - as an interaction between painting, poetry and song - are Heber’s friends Randy David, Virgilio Almario, Teo Antonio, Pete Lacaba, Krip Yuson, Frank Rivera, Ronnie Lazaro, Vim Nadera, Jose Tence Ruiz, Arnold “Igan” Clavio, Marne Kilates, and more. All are invited to interact at the opening of “Mga Tulâ, Kantá at Pintura” at 6 in the evening on Tuesday, April 18, 2006 at the Crucible Gallery ArtWalk in SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City. The exhibition runs until April 30, 2006.
