Media Watch on ABC5

I’ve thought of creating this new category on my blog some time ago, and I’ve finally done it now. I couldn’t help it, it was just too much already what I’ve been seeing on local television.

Real Stories by Loren Legarda - 10PM Friday, today. American Propaganda, this time against piracy. The propaganda was that buying pirated music or movie CDs is a crime not only because it hurts the industry but - as Loren puts it for the American head (Loren calls “expert”) of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), to get to the guts of the Filipino people - piracy is directly linked to international crime syndicates like drugs, gun running, human trafficking, prostitution and terrorism (as in Bin Laden). So if you support piracy you support Bin Laden - o ma-konsyensya ka daw!

Ito namang si Loren, lunok hook, line and MT Solar I, without even asking whether expert Jack Valenti has proof that Bin Laden burns DVDs. Kasi the truth is, WALA syang proof! Ang tagal ng tugtugin, mula pa kay John Malcolm:

“He also spoke about organized criminal syndicates whom actually profit from piracy, and made the link to terrorism by asserting that “organized crime syndicates are frequently engaged in many types of criminal enterprises, including supporting terrorist activities.” The IDG article states that when pressed for an actual case where file trading was connected to terrorism, Malcolm could not offer one, but said, “It would surprise me greatly if the number were not large.”" - From here

What’s the only basis for the link? MONEY. Money - as big as money earned in drugs, gun smuggling, human trafficking - that Hollywood and the American music industry is losing, and US-led slush economy is losing because underground business is being diverted from guns, drugs and goons, to intellectual property. Here, our dear American expert got his numbers right:

“The copyright industries were responsible in 2001 for some five percent of the GDP of the nation. Over the past quarter century, these industries’ share of GDP grew more than twice as fast as the remainder of the economy. They earn more international revenues than automobiles and auto parts, more than aircraft, more than agriculture. The copyright industries are creating new jobs at three times the rate of the rest of the economy. The movie industry alone has a surplus balance of trade with every single country in the world. No other American industry can make that statement. And all this comes at a time when the U.S. is suffering from some $400 billion in trade deficits.” - From here

As far as I’m concerned, piracy is not a crime, it’s KARMA! And if we Pinoys do our economics right, we can actually benefit from “piracy.”

This American propaganda madness is interspersed by Joey de Leon’s truly tasteless clips from his new comedy show (Teka Mona), an advert clip with Alyssa Alano endorsing “Sungitary Napkins.” Of course making fun of Alyssa’s broken English and accent to endorse napkins as face covers (half or full-face) for women who are masungit (or cross) whenever they have their menstrual period. Grabe. Contrived talaga.

Nakakasira ng araw…. Magkakape na lang muna ako at kakain ng tinapay! Hmph!
