ABC 5’s Sunday cooking programs

What a pleasant surprise. I think it was around 9:30AM when Alwin and I turned on the TVto realx and there was this Island Flavors program where they featured Taal, Batangas. :) The host of the program was a kind and warm woman called Chef Gigi. Apart from a very good tour of the Taal market, Chef Gigi showed some innovative cooking using Taal ingredients. I was really surprised at the information and intelligence of the program. When they showed the unique Taal empanada (that had sotanghon inside it), Chef Gigi described the taste and texture of the food and remarked that she was inspired to make her own at home for her kids.

I was surprised with that remark because empanada is not easy to make! Later, I realized the Chef Gigi was indeed a real chef! :)

After the Island Flavors program was another cooking program called Gourmet Everyday, and this Sunday they featured Chinese cooking. The show features the use of Taipan Sauces (they cooked Sweet and Sour Pork and a Shrimp and Squid dish). Although I don’t really fancy processed flavors and sauces, the cooking was actually quite good. I suppose this is because they have real chefs doing the show (they teach at the Center for Asian Culinary Studies) and definitely providing intelligent, valuable and healthy cooking information for the public - really so much better than movie celebrities showing fancy unhealthy quick-cooking tricks!

After Gourmet Everyday was a program called How ‘Bout My Place, hosted by two chefs who go visit a restaurant and learn to cook a special dish. This Sunday, they went to Cascada restaurnt and made grilled baby back ribs with coleslaw, sweet corn and grilled potatoes. Wow. :)
