Hopefully, life gets better

My next crochet project will be a yellow hairpin lace stole. :) Although I would’ve preferred a larger - maybe 4 inches staple - I am using the only available hairpin lace crochet staple that I could find which is only about 1.5 inches. Perhaps later I can make my own staple or ask someone from the ironworks to make them in several sizes.

This project will take a while since it is quite large. I try not to work too quickly and too obsessively since the repetitive handwork can lead to serious permanent injury, particularly RSI. “Ergonomics for Crafters” (http://www.fiber-images.com/Free_Things/Articles/ergonomics_for_crafters.htm) gives valuable information for people who work with their hands to avoid injury.

Thanks to Anne for the suggestion to use a magnifying glass. I may take a while to get ued to it since it means having a new working set-up, but I’m afraid I may need it if I want to continue making those tiny beaded jewelry.

Anyways … Len was asking where I’ve gone. While she’s been off to Nairobi, I’ve just been here in Quezon City, doing all this needlework. :)

Things are doing considerably better, in particular with my partner. We are living together again, I visit my mother and to see Alwin ocassionally, but we are trying to work things out. Getting all the work out of the way seems to be doing the relationship a great deal of good. I can quit work anyway since it doesn’t really make any difference if I continue. After all, the biggest reason for working was that I still believed that great wonderful things can take place, can change in Philippine society (duh!), at least partially through a larger understanding of the creative and the socio-political dimensions of technologies. But I’ve stopped believing in that some time ago and so I often only work for the opportunity to travel abroad and meet people, and sometimes even for the money (although often there is very little of this, which doesn’t bother me anyway since my partner and I live very simple lives). We live in a very friendly place, walking distance from my mom’s house. And lots of exciting things happening here - this afternoon, a guy living downstairs was arrested by plainclothes police. There were guns pointing, a bit of scuffle, etc.

At any rate, the amazing thing is I enjoy all the needlework. I really love the hairpin lace and the crochet and the beads. I also got some knitting needles and will later try to learn knitting. I also found some shuttles for tatting at the crafts store in Megamall, so tatting could be another thing to learn. I’d also like to try Tunisian crochet which is a very charming cross between crochet and knitting. :)

I truly hope things continue to get better …
