Inside Outside

Fortun's Urban GardeningVery many suns ago -shortly after the humans returned (late April) they moved two of the pots outside into the communal garden. One of the cacti was rotting away, perhaps because it wasn’t getting enough light -and some tree cuttings (see earlier interior photo) had been sitting indoors doing nothing (neither growing or dying) for several moons too.

Pot indoors

Within a few days, the tree cuttings had started sprouting leaves. Quite amazing, after sitting there waiting for so long. In the meantime, the humans have been adding extra seeds (papaya, squash, avocado, etc.) to those (calamansi, tamarind, guava and several unknown things) that were also planted in the big pot at the same time as the cuttings (early February). The communal maintenance workers also put some grass mowings in the pot last time they cut the grass. Now the pot is an explosion of new growth. Some of the earlier seeds had already sprouted and died indoors -but perhaps some remained alive and have been encouraged by the new circumstances. One day I’ll have to learn to identify all the different plants, but at the moment I’m already so busy that it’s getting hard finding time to sleep all day……

Pot outdoors

Unfortunately, the cacti haven’t done so well. It is now the rainy season, so they are probably still not getting enough sun. I’m also a little ashamed to say that at night the area is a meeting place for some pretty mangy looking stray cats -who I’m afraid to say, don’t seem to understand the difference between a plant pot and a cat litter. Nevertheless, I believe the humans have left the cacti outside -partly because bringing them in wouldn’t help and partly in the hope that the cats will prefer the cacti to the plants in the main pot….. Unfortunately, a few nights ago, there was some damage in the big pot -but (until now) it doesn’t seem to be too serious…..
