What I want to learn, woof!
Posted by: Edward in: Resources and ReferencesAges ago, my caregiver downloaded a book called “The Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs” by H. Abelson, G.J. Sussman, and J. Sussman (MIT Press and McGraw-Hill). Several weeks ago, she was finally able to print all +600 pages of the book (I do find printed pages easier on the eyes for reading rather than loads of text on the screen).
I have been reading SICP with much delight because it somehow allows me to have a broad, unrestricted view of the different programming paradigms that I was compelled to shuffle through separately in the other two books that I have been reading (”Learn Prolog Now” and “Turbo Pascal”).
So I just realized that when I set out to make this website “Edward’s CnC”, what I really wanted to do was to appreciate computation as an intellectual activity, and thus computer programming as a powerful medium for controlling large complex systems. I did not simply want to learn using a programming language; I wanted to study the implementation and linguistic aspect of programming paradigms!
OK, so what do I do with the other two books?
Hmmm … actually, I might need a better Prolog book (or maybe not since SICP has a section on logic programming), but the Turbo Pascal is not bad at all if one understands it’s pedagogical limitations. Or is that pedadog?
My caregiver Fatima also told me that her cousin Grace was going to send me a Canadian Mail-Order Puppy Doggie Bride. Hmmm… actually I already have a Filipina girlfriend, her name is Maria. When Maria heard about the Canadian bride she remarked that when it arrives she’d be at the door with a cleaver!
