What I miss at the moment

It was good to see the fat orange cat again - he seems to have found a small clean corner to bask on our neighbor’s tin roof. Even with all the wind and rain, much of the garbage that came down from the upper floor is still there - and more being added a few times each week …

Cat on a dirty tin roof

Poor old cat, that roof used to be so clean, and so he had all that space to himself… I wonder if our neighbor knows … I guess not. I’ve been told, garbage and water pouring from the upper floors have been the cause of awful fights around these apartment blocks. A few days ago there were some really awful shouting over some dogshit.

It was nice to see the other orange mangy cat come into our apartment again. I guess he was looking for food (in the bin) and some mice. We have mice living under the electric stove in the kitchen. Plenty of wild life in these places. ;)

I managed to make some “bean burgers” and some “lime and mint chicken” for dinner tonight. Quite good. There was some mint in the supermarket today, quite cheap, so I got some. Very nice to put in tea, and chocolate, and certainly nice for cooking and salads.

A friend in Mandalay has responded to my email, but I still have no idea how our friends in Yangon are doing … I really hope they are alright.

Al just forwarded me an announcement about a symposium on art-programming in Paris. People I’ve met before are there… I miss the ambiance of such an event, especially the intellectual tradition that accounts for such within the arts … Well there are a very few amazing people I can discuss, mess around with ideas and argue, with here - very few, and they are not “art people.” Of course Trevor is here, the only person with whom I seem to have transcended the intellectual to something more profound. And I remember, a very sensual type of intellectual and creative dialogue prevails among artists in General Santos … Utterly different from Metro Manila, center of Americanized lifestyle in Asia.

There are certain things in my past experience that I suddenly miss, somehow, from my friends in Myanmar to the artist-intellectuals in Europe and vivacious Ali in GenSan. Odd, I even miss that man in Sierre who spoke only poetry in French…
